Modern Room
In creating a modern room, one must consider all aspects of the area to be decorated. The more natural light that can stream into the room, the easier it will be to get the modern effect.
Since furniture has more purposes than just looks, consider starting first with picking out the best pieces for your room. Modern furniture is as functional as it is eye catching. It is sleek in design, and has many angles that may create a geometric look of lines, circles, and other shapes. The fabric or finish is usually smooth and is often in leathers, velvets, micro fibers, polished metal, glass, and gloss finishes. Much of the modern furnishings of today have the new gloss finish, which is available in a variety of colors. The look you get with modern furniture is one of a clean, crisp, and an uncluttered living area.
Modern Contemporary furnishings are modern pieces of a time-period. These furnishings can fit in with most any décor and go great with their modern counterparts.
Flooring in a modern room is often tile or short pile carpet. The floor area is kept simple as to not detract from the angles and lines of the modern furniture. The colors are light to show off the furniture pieces.
If more of a contemporary look is desired, walls should be kept light to neutral in color and should be smooth, not textured.
If a more modern space is wanted, walls can be rich colors, but any design should be minimal and provide a backdrop for a wall hanging or shelves, so as to preserve the elegance of the modern furniture pieces.
To create a modern space, walls should have few hangings, as too many or ones too busy give too much for the eye to focus on, detracting from the modern furniture. The wall hangings can be of bold colors to accent the furniture and should be strategically placed.
Many modern spaces have built-ins, such as cabinets, tables, shelves, bookcases, and room dividers. The built-ins are always functional and add interest to the area, while blending with the furnishings.
Lighting can be from natural light, table or floor lamps, track lights, recessed lights, or any modern design. Time should be spent on the effects of the lighting, such as track lights shining on a waterfall, or a special piece of art, bedroom lighting that is soft and soothing, or kitchen lighting that gives more light to work areas making a more functional space.
Window treatments put the finishing touch to a room. When decorating for a modern room, window treatments should be functional, yet unobtrusive to the modern design. Drapery panels or roman shades do well with modern furniture. Colors can blend in or pick up other colors in the room.
There is no one way or set pattern to decorate a modern room. Take the pieces of modern furniture you love, and build on them with flooring, walls, lighting, accessories, and window treatments. Most of all, have fun with it and your room will look great!
